Irreverent Maine Survival Tips
CAMDEN
If you can make it to Camden, it is well worth a day trip or even a half-day trip. If you are only staying in Maine for the weekend, this would be one of the must-sees.
Camden is located on U.S. Route 1 which is Maine's main street. It also means that getting there will make for some slow traveling as casual motorists make their way down winding roads in Winnebegos. The town has beautiful historic homes and a lovely green lawn overlooking the harbor. If you sit on the lawn you can watch a large creek flow under some elevated buildings and cascade down a rock ledge into the harbor.
The harbor is small, packed full of boats and very picturesque. Typically a small family of harbor ducks can be spotted in the inner harbor. You will find historic schooners called Windammers. Maine Windjammer Cruises and the Appledore offers day-sails on schooners. They also have a page with some area information.
Nearby, you will also often see large yachts owned by the rich and famous. Really! Some of the people known to summer in Camden include Tom Selleck, Liz Taylor, and others. If you feel inspired you can take a Windjammer cruise, for two hours or two weeks.
Nearby is a small National Forest with a lookout on top of Mt. Battie. You can see Mt. Battie from the town and harbor and, of course, the reverse is true as well, only more breathtaking. The park offers spectacular views of Camden and dozens of islands in Blue Hill Bay. A map outlines for visitors when they are looking at Mt. Desert Island, Rockport, Rockland, Owl's Head, Matinicus Island, Vinal Haven, Blue Hill and other important sites.
Of Note: If you visit Camden in the winter you cannot visit Mt. Battie, but you can still get a beautiful view of the town and bay. Try skiing at the Camden Snowbowl. This tiny little resort offers a single chair lift that takes you to the top of the mountain for a spectacular view of Blue Hill Bay frozen in winter snow.
